The Senate passed the Common Cents Act on Monday, Sept. 28, after it was already approved by the House. The legislation would officially end production of one-cent coins for general circulation and allow businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel when exact change isn't available. Amounts ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents could be rounded down to the nearest nickel, while amounts ending in 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents could be rounded up.
