WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman midfielder James Bowhile scored the game-winning goal with less than one minute left in regulation, as No. 1 Worcester North defeated eighth-seeded Wachusett, 2-1, during Tuesday night's MIAA Central Division I Quarterfinals.
With the victory, Worcester North advances to the Semi-Final round, and will face Shepherd Hill on Thursday, Nov. 10 at Clinton High School. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
Less than nine minutes into the game, Wachusett's Matthew Dickman carried the ball into Worcester North's territory, drawing out Worcester North's senior goalkeeper Obadiah Munene Dickman chipped the ball over Munene's shoulder, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
Worcester North nearly scored in the 29th minute, as senior midfielder Prince Oduro took a penalty kick within the 12-yard box, causing a scrum to break out in front of the Wachusett goal. A Mountaineer defender quickly disrupted Worcester North's scoring opportunity, kicking the ball out of bounds.
In the 34th minute, Worcester North came up short again on another scoring opportunity, as senior midfielder Tyler Newman crashed the net on a rebounded shot, but a ground save by senior goalkeeper Christopher Goodnow kept Worcester North scoreless.
Worcester North came out a new team in the second half, maintaining ball possession deep into Mountaineer territory.
In the 68th minute, Goodnow stopped back-to-back shots by senior forward Yasin Ahmed, but another rebounded shot by Ahmed connected with the back of the Wachusett net, tying the game, 1-1.
"My goalkeeper Chris Goodnow played one heck of a game," said Wachusett head coach Jason Gaumond. "For a first-year keeper, I can't say enough on how Chris played for us this year."
Wachusett finishes its season at 10-7-1.
"I'm very proud of my team tonight, we played with passion liked I asked them to against a very skilled North High team," Gaumond added.
