NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The Algonguin Tomahawks didn’t have much of a reason to cheer after Saturday's 35–0 loss to Wachusett.
It took Wachusett a full quarter to start putting points on the board, but it didn’t let up once it got going. Soon after regaining possession in the second quarter, the Mountaineers' offense drove to within a yard of the end zone before running back Scott Tupper charged up the middle to score.
Later, running back Trevor MacNeil ran 31 yards after a double hand-off. Wachusett increased its lead to 14–0 after a successful extra point.
Things started getting sloppy as halftime approached, as both teams committed a total of four turnovers in quick succession before the whistle blew.
After the Tomahawks failed to capitalize during their first possession in the second half, the Mountaineers went back to work. Running back Owen Gibbons scored a breakaway, 60-yard touchdown with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter. About four minutes later, MacNeil scored his second touchdown. Finally, in the fourth quarter, running back Cam Ruziak scored off a 59-yard punt return, effectively putting the outcome of the game to rest as
Despite the loss, Algonquin head coach Justin McKay remained positive.
"I was proud of the effort today," he said following the game. "We just need to be able to withstand the bumps."
"We stayed in that valley today," he added. But, he said, "The final score does not dictate how hard our kids are working. They just need to know to keep working hard. Good things come to those who work hard."
Algonquin (1-1) will host Nashoba Regional High School (2-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Wachusett (1-1) plays at Fitchburg (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
