HOLDEN, Mass. — With a talented force of players on the roster this year, the Wachusett Boys Varsity Soccer team will open its season Friday against Doherty High School at Foley Stadium.
The 2012 Mountaineers had 97 boys try out for all three of the program's teams, with 29 boys selected for the varsity team, said coach Jason Gaumond. The team will be led by senior captains Matthew Dickmann and Garrett Lemoine and junior Taiichi Ash.
"I believe we are a talented team this year. I expect Dickmann to be a major scorer," said Gaumond. "He has skill, speed, size and is a physical player."
Gaumond also expects major contributions from seniors Andy Dwyer, Zihao Gao, Lemoine, Brian Van Doren as well as juniors Ash, Ibe Diabate and Jon Isperduli.
While Van Doren, Ash and Isperduli began last fall as starters, injuries put an abrupt end to their season and all three missed 80 percent of the games.
"Now, healthy this year, I believe they will have a tremendous season and impact," said Gaumond.
Brennan Goehl will mind the net for the Mountaineers this year, and Gaumond said the junior has the capability to be the top keeper in Central Mass.
"He comes in as a pure trained goalkeeper, which is a plus for the program," he said.
Defensively, juniors Mike Bean and Nate Scott, seniors Dan Innamorati, George Russo as well as Lemoine and Dwyer should see action this year as well, said the coach.
"I've been impressed with the play of sophomores Ben Amaral and Peter Sparks," he said. "Both, I feel, will contribute greatly to this team this year."
The Mountaineers will take the field at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Foley Stadium on 305 Chandler St. in Worcester for their opener against Doherty High School.
