HOLDEN, Mass. — In an exciting summer season for Holden Baseball, teams enjoyed great success. The 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars and 10- and 11-year-old All-Stars both claimed state sectional championships, the 11-12 All-Stars and two Babe Ruth All-Star teams advanced to the district finals, and another Babe Ruth All-Star team moved on to the district semifinals.

The hard-fought tournament run for Holden's 10-11 All Stars came to an end last Wednesday in Millbury after a 15-7 loss to Braintree in the state semifinals.

Braintree jumped out to an early, insurmountable lead despite Holden's comeback efforts.

Down 9-0, Holden's Johnny Flynn and Jacob Saulnier started off the second inning with walks. Owen Leary followed with an infield hit, and Mike Maher, Evan Marconi and Ryan Prosser each had singles. Holden scored four runs in this inning.

Braintree went on to score two more in the third, but Holden countered with another run in the fourth, making it 11-5. But Braintree scored three more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.

Though Holden rallied in the sixth with a two-run home run by Johnny Flynn, its efforts fell short.

The team ended tournament play with a 6-1 record. It captured the District 4 championship as well as the Section 1 championship.
