HOLDEN, Mass. — Wachusett students Alex Jagelsky, Hayden Frechette-McCall, Jeremy Bennie and his brother Colin Bennie were congratulated by members of the Wachusett Regional School Committee Monday night for their success setting new school and state records last spring as the 4 x 800m relay team.
The team finished first in the June 11 New England Championship Meet and fifth in the New Balance Nationals the very next weekend, setting new records at Wachusett and in Massachusetts.
Jagelsky has since graduated from Wachusett and is now away at college, but the other boys were there Monday night to go before the school committee.
When asked if they had found a fourth person to fill the place left open by Jagelsky, Jeremy Bennie said they would have to wait and see.
"One of the great things about Wachusett is that we really do encourage a lot of people to take part," said Bennie. "Our track team is huge, so we pretty much always have new guys that are looking to take part in it."
Once the new team comes together, Bennie said, 'maybe we will do some more damage this year."
"It's an unbelievable accomplishment, and we're very proud of you," said school committee chair Duncan Leith, who added, "it's nice that this high school has so many things to offer us. Some kids run track, some kids play baseball, football, basketball, some are in plays, some are in the musical program — there's just so many varied activities that can hopefully meet the needs of many of the students."
