HOLDEN, Mass. — For a second time in the Wachusett Region, students will have the opportunity to engage in a refreshing and broad visual arts experience with the Summer Art Academy at Wachusett Regional High School.
The Wachusett Summer Art Academy is now accepting registrations for its summer program for middle and high-school students, with sessions beginning July 5. Additionally, single-day workshops are planned for July 5 and 6, with a full week program planned for July 9 to 13.
The academy was launched for the first time last summer, and offers students from grades three and up a range of creative courses in different artistic mediums, from drawing and painting to basketry and architectural modeling.
"Whether one desires to extend their skills, or try a whole new learning endeavor, the Academy has opportunities to express, communicate and grow," explained director Ralph Caouette, Wachusett Regional School District Art Head.
The staff of the academy consists of motivated, award winning and rangy professionals boasting well over a hundred collective years of experience in art and teaching, said Caouette.
Furthermore, instructor Maureen Caouette was the 2011 National Middle School Art Educator of the Year.

For more information, All courses run two and a quarter hours, and have a course fee of $105 each, which includes most materials used in courses. All classes meet at WRHS in the Fine Arts section
Interested students are encouraged to sign register early Class times are as follows:
Morning session, 9:15am-11:30am and afternoon session, 12-2:15pm.
The first day, the Academy will be open for registration at 8:30am. Tuesday to Friday, opening at 9 a.m.

One day Workshops: Thursday, July 5 9:15am-2:15pm
T1- ADOBE Photoshop- Fun Self Portrait
We will be using digital cameras, Photo Booth and Adobe Photoshop to create a “self portrait with a twist.” This is a project where students can begin to learn Adobe Photoshop or expand their knowledge of the program. This is also a chance for any young artist to try digital art. Even those who “don’t like art” may find their muse on our big screen iMacs.

T2- Metal Embossing Let's tool around with Metal! Repousse is the ancient art of tooling metal. Using a variety of tools, textures and shapes you will create two unique pieces of art by embossing in metal.

T3- EXPLORE & CREATE with Glass Fusing, Beading, Wire Wrapping and Knotting Who knows where the combination of these materials will lead us? We will create fused pieces of glass that can be turned into jewelry or whimsical hangings. This is a new process of glass design that can be done in the microwave!!! Participants will use a 'coiling gizmo' to learn wire wrapping and knotting techniques. Just add some beads and creativity to produce unique pieces of artwork!

F1- Architectural Model Building
Explore some basic styles of homes, learn the language of blueprints. Scale it all into a basic 3-D model. Lots of hands-on problem solving—geared to your experience level.

F2- Marvelous Mosaics Explore the ancient art form of Mosaics. Create two unique pieces of art using a variety of tiles and stones.

M1- Unique Basketry Creations Creative, colorful storage baskets (or containers) will be made to hold your precious items. Form your baskets into your own unique shape. Bowls, pencil holders, phone or I Pod holders, vases, the possibilities are endless! We will use a variety of materials from folded or rolled paper, paper coils, reeds and more. Each container will be colorfully decorated in your choice of colors and added materials such as watercolor, tissue paper, feathers, yarn and beads. Enjoy the fun!

M2-Plaster Animals, Reptiles & More!
Animals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Learn to use the exciting medium of plaster gauze when creating your creature. This sculpture will have you using wire, newspaper, plaster and paint. So bring your smock because we will get messy!

M3- Explore Drawing! Do you like to draw? Want to develop your drawing skills and experiment in a variety of materials and techniques? This class will use various types of pencils, pen & ink, markers, pastels & watercolor to create drawings. Work with still life, photos, & your imagination. Material fee beyond--$5 to instructor

M4- Morning With the Masters
Paint and Draw like the great art masters! You will explore the art of the Impressionists and create your own masterpiece! We will work inside and outside the studio.

M5- Colored Pencil Workshop Explore the wonders and range of this common art material. Learn to color mix, layer, burnish, and overlay several ways in becoming a young master—all taught by a true and emerging colored pencil artist.

M6/A6- Honors-Gifted & Talented An accelerated and advanced studio offering—full day for students entering Art Foundations who wish to dive in and excel with materials and techniques common to Art Foundational work. Taught by a true Wachusett master with 35 years of experience, this offering is designed to give the accelerated student entering high school a strong foundation! This course includes slides of exemplary student work, critical thinking, technical guidance and the importance of sketchbooks.

A1- Imaginative Creations in Papier Mache Decorative plates, vases, frames, ornaments, 3-D Initials, bowls or baskets. Create 1 or more practical or ornamental pieces with papier mache. We will colorfully decorate these with different painting techniques, and add creative touches with stamping, beads and sequins.

A2- ‘Paper’ Magic Discover the world of paper from creating handmade recycled paper to origami, paper sculpture and collage. Bring your imagination and be ready to transform different papers into works of art.

A3- Intro to Pastels Do you like to draw & Paint? Here is a class where you can combine both and learn how to paint with pastels. In ‘Pastels’, we will experiment with various ways to use pastels and color combinations and use this knowledge to explore still life and landscape paintings. Students interested in the fine arts will enjoy this class!

A4- Clay Creations Learn the basics of hand-building in clay! Using pinch, coil and slab methods, you will transform this material into usable and sculptural artwork. After your claywork is made it will be glazed, adding color and beauty to your work.

A5- Painting Explore various approaches and materials, such as watercolor, tempera and even acrylic in making your strokes, color plans and themes come to life. Learn to be more fluid and natural with these traditional paint materials.
