WORCESTER, Mass. — Representative Jim McGovern (D-Worcester) transformed his Worcester office into an art gallery on Saturday afternoon to recognize local participants in the 2012 Congressional Art Competition.
Students from over a dozen schools in the Massachusetts 3rd Congressional District submitted 187 pieces to the competition, which features hundreds of thousands of high school students across the nation. Founded by Congress 1982, the competition "provides an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents," according to the U.S. House of Representatives website.
"It really is wonderful and inspiring to see such incredible talent," McGovern said. "I'm jealous, because I can’t even draw a straight line."
The district winner was Isabel Rummelhoff from Holliston High School. Her piece, "Derp," will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol along with the winning artwork from all the other districts. In addition, Rummelhoff and one guest will be invited to attend an unveiling ceremony with McGovern in Washington, D.C.
Apart from the overall winner, several other students won awards in the contest’s many categories. Their names are as follows:

One of the winners, Erik Fuller, an Algonquin junior from Northborough, said that this was the first major award he had won for his art.
Describing the process of finishing his piece—a pastel scene depicting a late-night city street—Fuller added, "it was like three weeks of lunch periods."
McGovern, who has held the competition in his district since first taking office in 1997, said that not all members of Congress participate. Now that redistricting has changed the landscape of Massachusetts House seats, he encouraged all those present to lobby their new Representatives to hold competitions of their own, if they do not already do so.
