WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Seth Mazzaglia, a 29-year-old martial arts instructor from Dover, was arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree murder in the death of Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott of Westborough. The cause of death was announced as strangulation or suffocation.
"Under circumstances manifesting in extreme indifference to the value of human life by strangling her and or suffocating her," said Judge Stephen Morrison as he read Mazzaglia the charges against him.
Mazzaglia was arraigned by video from the Stafford County Jail. No plea was entered, but a probable cause hearing was scheduled for Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. Jane Young of the New Hampshire Attorney General's office recommended that bail be withheld because the case could potentially result in a life sentence.
The state announced it will divulge the affidavit from the case to the public defender's office, but that information will not be made available to anyone else at this time. Young left without comment, but has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. Monday.
No one from the Marriott family attended the arraignment.
Mazzaglia was charged with second-degree murder Saturday. Police searched for Marriott's body in the area of Peirce Island in Portsmouth, N.H., through the weekend, but were unable to locate it.
Marriott, a 19-year-old student at the University of New Hampshire, was last heard from Tuesday evening, and reported missing Thursday. The missing person search for her spanned several states before it was called off early Saturday.
