Much has been written and discussed about the WRSD budget in the last several months. As you make your decision about whether the school budget is worthy of your support at town meeting, I would encourage you to seek out the facts before forming your opinion. Please do not form your opinion based on something you hear or a letter to the editor you read because there has been so much misinformation spread this budget season. Many people are throwing out numbers such as $79.3M budget, or 60 custodians, or 5 assistant principals at the high school and saying these numbers are too high. In order to state that a number is too large or too small, you need a benchmark to compare it to. When you take a minute look the benchmarks, you will see that while the numbers are high (as we have almost 7500 students and 13 schools), they are not high when you compare them to other sizable towns/districts, and in fact they are remarkably low.
If you want information about the School Committee’s budget, please visit www.wrsdbudget.net or contact your local School Committee representative. We would be happy to answer your questions about the budget. The vast majority of School Committee members strongly feel that the proposed budget is the lowest one we can support while still maintaining a great school district, which serves the community by keeping property values strong and gives our students the opportunities they deserve for their futures. We all live in these member towns and we support our town services, but we were elected by the local voters to ensure we have a great school district and we are performing our duty. I encourage everyone to attend town meeting and have their voices heard – it’s your money!
