Letter: Endorsement For McWaters

Dear Editor:
I am writing to respectfully ask that residents of the Town of Holden vote to give Richard McWaters a seat on the Wachusett Regional School District Committee.  In the three years of my term representing Holden on the school committee, I have experienced personally how difficult it can be to stand up for a different perspective when the majority is pushing for a particular conclusion.  Deciding to go against the grain in the public sphere is not for the faint hearted and requires that anyone who would make such a choice come pre-equipped with a strong sense of their internal value as an individual.  Having personally witnessed Mr. McWaters’s contributions to the general dialogue through his submission of difficult and probing questions at various school related public meetings, I am convinced that he is exactly the type of person that I am describing.

In addition to being the father of two children who attend Mayo Elementary School, Mr. McWaters recently retired from a thirty-five year career as a software, hardware, database and web engineer for Raytheon.  Professionally he brings to the table experience with budgets, project design, justification and implementation, and organizational skills all of which are key components of a school committee member’s responsibility.   He has served on the School Improvement Council at Mayo Elementary for the past two years.  In conclusion, I submit that Mr. McWaters is the only one of the four candidates who has explicitly expressed his support for a reasonable balance between the needs of the school district and the needs of the member towns.  Holden residents who value informed, engaged and most importantly independent representation, would do well to elect Richard McWaters to represent them on May 14th.
