TAUNTON, Mass. — The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for interior southeast Massachusetts from Worcester to Boston until 7:30 p.m.
A tornado watch is also in effect until 9 p.m. in Worcester County.
A tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes.
Thunderstorms with torrential rainfall were moving northeast from Connecticut and Long Island Sound by 3:30 p.m.
The NWS has warned that rapidly gathering water on roads will cause minor urban flooding through the mid afternoon, and streams and creeks may rise above their banks, causing minor property damage.
The NWS is warning against driving in areas where water covers the road, because the water depth may be too great to allow a car to cross. Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases or a warning is issued.
Some of the thunderstorms could be severe, bringing with them hail and damaging winds, warns James M. Arnold, weather specialist at the Shrewsbury Emergency Management Agency.
"The Storm Prediction Center has put central Massachusetts in an area with a 15 percent chance of wind and hail reaching or exceeding severe criteria, and just to our west there is an area with a 2 percent chance of an isolated tornado," Arnold said in a Friday morning email. "I think this looks pretty reasonable, and I expect any severe weather in our area to be limited to potentially damaging surface winds with a slight possibility of some hail."
