Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the Central Massachusetts region on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms will begin to develop between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and become more numerous as the afternoon progresses.

"Some storms will likely contain strong to damaging winds...large hail along with torrential downpours," the National Weather Service warns.

While it notes that strong storms usually diminish after sunset, that may not be the case Wednesday.

"This evening strong storms will likely continue into the evening with the main threat becoming flash flooding," according to the National Weather Service.

Shrewsbury weather specialist Jim Arnold said considerable surface heating in the morning and a slow moving front could act as a trigger for the storm development.

"Most of Massachusetts could be impacted by strong to severe storms this afternoon," Arnold said. "These should be scattered about and not in organized clusters north of the Mass Pike and more frequent and better organized south of the Pike."

Arnold said the next couple of days will be cooler and clearer.

"Picture perfect summer weather," Arnold said.
