Obituary: Clara Dorothea (Anderson) Ellner

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. - Clara Dorothea (Anderson) Ellner, of West Yarmouth died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.


Born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 26, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Elis Johannson and Hulda Anderson of Sweden. Clara was educated at The Wartburg in Mt. Vernon New York and graduated from Becker Jr. College in Worcester. She worked at Reed and Prince in Worcester as a secretary.


She was married to Harry G. Ellner on March 21, 1943 at First Lutheran Church and they were together for 65 years. She was a member of Nordic Lodge, Vasa Order. As a resident of Holden, she was a member of The Chaffins Woman's Club, Flotilla 1301, U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Immanuel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School. Clara and her husband owned and operated Holden Television Co. for 28 years. They enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Caribbean. Clara studied oil painting, played the piano, and enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, reading, gardening and shopping with her daughters.


Upon moving to Cape Cod in 1984, she joined St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Harwich and the Barnstable and Yarmouth Senior Centers where she studied woodcarving.


Clara is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Kean (Thomas) and Judith Sands (Neil); grandchildren, Kierstin Kean, Erik Sands (Kristin), and Bethany Sands; great-granddaughter, Gabrielle; a niece and nephew; and relatives in Sweden.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Dr., South Yarmouth. A Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 14 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, East Harwich.


Donations in Clara's memory are welcome for the Handbell Choir at St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the Scholarship Fund of Vinland Lodge of Cape Cod, Vasa.
