Central Massachusetts Towns Raise Eastern Encephalitis Alert Levels

Several local towns are raising their EEE threat levels to "Moderate."

GRAFTON, Mass. - Grafton, Northborough and Southborough raised their Eastern Equine Encephalitis threat level to "Moderate" on Thursday following the second detection of the virus in Westborough.

Shrewsbury's level is already at "Moderate."

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the detection of mammal-biting mosquitoes infected with Eastern Equine Encephalitis again in Westborough on Thursday. The department raised that town's threat level to "High" and recommended curtailing outdoor activities during the hours when mosquitoes are most active.

The first detection of EEE in Westborough occurred in late July.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Al DeMaria said it's important for people to use insect repellent, to cover exposed skin and avoid outdoor activities at dusk and nighttime when the inspects are most active. The state offered other tips to stay protected against EEE.

EEE is a serious disease for all ages and can cause death. There has been one human case of EEE in the state, but it is believed that it was contracted out of state.

What happened to our "code red" alert system? The only time it was needed is when the power went out and then it didn't work..
What a waste of tax dollars!
As for the E-squitos the State has already sprayed by plane S.E Massachusetts and has put other communities requesting spraying into discussion mode until the first frost.
Obviously, the extra money that was spent on informing welfare recipients that they needed to vote for their sugar daddy party, is now not available to be spent on public health issues.

John Dowling:

The Board of Selectmen will be discussing this issue on Tuesday night at the BOS meeting. We will be having a representative from Central Mass Mosquito Control in to talk to us. Please tune in or come by the Municipal Center to attend.

Koji:

I don't mind the mosquitos so much, it's the black & green flies that bother me (especially when I eat grilled meat outside). Could we spray for them too?

scratch:

The town voted some time ago to not spray for the mosquitos, for fear of 'other damages'. Now that it affects humans'HOW DO YOU LIKE IT NOW!!!!???'

Carott88:

The "towns raises" alert levels? How 'bout some grammar -- at least in the headlines...
