AUBURN, Mass. – Auburn native Sam James's appearance on NBC’s “The Voice” has earned him the key to the City of Worcester for “representing the music scene in the city of Worcester.”

“One thing that’s been consistent in the city of Worcester is that we’ve had a great music scene," said Worcester Councilman Frederick Rushton. "A lot of great bands and singers have come out of Worcester, but somebody has to step out into the spotlight, so we should applaud Sam for what he’s done.”

“Producers of ‘The Voice’ wanted to steer Sam toward being from Boston, but he kept telling them no, that he loved Worcester and what Worcester is all about,” Rushton added. “I’m proud that he’s representing Worcester so well, and that he’s taken that next step for the Worcester music scene and put it out there.”

James, who was cut from the show on Oct. 29 after losing a knockout round, regularly plays shows in Worcester at The Banner and Lucky Dog Music Hall. He told the City Council, which gave him the key to the city, that “it’s nice to be from such a warm city.”

“We might be small, but we’re mighty, and I’m a Worcester guy. I’m not a Boston guy,” James said. “Everyone here has been so supportive of the show and my career going forward, past and present. This is such a great honor.”

Back in September, James advanced on the singing competition show, which features Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine as coaches. James landed on Levine’s team after he sang “Imagine” by John Lennon while also playing guitar.

This was his second time trying to reach musical stardom on the show, and he unfortunately came up short again.

But James has some opportunities lined up as a result of being on “The Voice.” It was recently announced on WXLO, a local radio station, that James will be the opening act for Gavin Degraw and Andy Grammer at the WXLO Acoustic Christmas concert on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at Mechanics Hall.

To purchase tickets for the concert, go to Mechanics Hall's website.

James attended Assumption School in Millbury and graduated from St. John’s Prep in Shrewsbury before moving to Worcester. He now lives in Sturbridge. When James is not touring, he plays locally at clubs, restaurants and venues, including the Banner in Worcester.
