North Salem Plays For P.I.N.K.

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The greens at the Salem Golf Club were covered in pink on Thursday, as golfers gathered to Play for P.I.N.K., the breast cancer research organization.

The tournament got off to a “shotgun start” at 8:30 a.m. Any interested golfer was invited to join in. Despite the steam room-like weather, over 100 participants paid $150 each for a day including continental breakfast, luncheon, raffles, and of course, golf.

Local businesses supported the event by sponsoring individual holes on the course, where they could advertise on the flags. Thanks to underwriting from Bloomberg, Estee Lauder and Wilson, the full portion of the fee could go directly to cancer research.

Sharon Dittelman, from Ridgefield, Conn. said, “I had breast cancer, so it’s a charity near and dear to my heart. This is an opportunity to make a difference and make a donation. I’m really impatient that they haven’t found a solution yet.”

Annette Theoharides, whose Greek name means, “God’s joy,” was playing with Dittelman. “This is a challenging course,” she said, and agreed when Dittleman remarked, “It’s 97 degrees today and we wouldn’t be out here if it weren’t for a good cause.”

Janet Bellagamba, who Italian name means “beautiful leg,” was, to the contrary, teeing off with a cast on her limb. “I broke my leg in April,” she said. “But all that matters is that I’m out here.”

Play for P.I.N.K. (Prevention, Immediate Diagnosis, New Technology, Knowledge) is a grassroots organization which helps people organize sporting and lifestyle events in return for donations to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. All sorts of events qualify: golf, tennis, swimming, bowling, riding -- even wine tastings, bocce and card games.
