Red Barn Holiday Tree-Trimming

Holden Red Barn

Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA

Free

Join in on the fun next Saturday as the Holden Red Barn continues its new tradition of decorating a holiday tree for Holden's feathered friends to enjoy.

The environmentally friendly project got off the ground for the first time last year, with families showing up with garlands of cranberries and popcorn, suet bells and other edible decorations to decorate the festive tree.

The Friends of the Red Barn invite residents to once again bring their own edible decorations or ready-made ones to decorate the holiday tree. As the birds have their fill of the delicious adornments, the community can add replacements throughout the holiday season.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at The Red Barn on Shrewsbury Street near Alden Lab.

Cocoa, cookies and hot cider will be served at the event..

The Friends of The Red Barn provide this recipe for a basic bird seed cake:

Ingredients

3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons corn syrup
4 cups bird seed, any type
Directions

In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together. Roll mixture out on wax paper. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters. Make a small hole in the middle of each cutout. Let dry four to six hours or overnight, turning often to dry both sides. Hang in trees and bushes using short pieces of raffia or cotton yarn that birds can use in the spring to line their nests.
